Challenge

The challenge of the project lies in developing a future-proof strategic planning strategy in collaboration with the National Recycling Industry Association. This involves not only addressing current challenges in the recycling industry, such as waste management and sustainability, but also anticipating and preparing for future changes, such as new environmental regulations or technological advancements. The goal is to create a flexible and adaptable strategic plan that enables the recycling industry to effectively tackle emerging challenges and seize future opportunities in a sustainable manner.

To achieve the design of ANIR's strategic planning, a space was created under a collaborative and anticipatory logic, combining structure with experimentation for the construction of a future-proof strategic planning. This was done using a proven design methodology called Strategy for the Future through Design Method, which has been utilized across various sectors, industries, and types of organizations.

This allows us to look into the future to anticipate changes and, at the same time, provide the necessary steps to reach that future; incorporate a systemic perspective and address intangibility; involve various individuals within the organization and key stakeholders, and promote shifts in meaning and critical reflection.

Inspire

The project involved several research stages, ranging from trend analysis related to the recycling industry to examining references and precedents to broaden our understanding of the future and its challenges.

All these tasks enabled us, as a team, to set objectives regarding leading the strategic planning and its collaborators.

Connect & Engage

While the research phase identified certain obvious factors that the planning should take into account, it was crucial to listen to and understand the perspectives, both present and future-oriented, of various stakeholders. Hence, we led two collaborative workshops, with a future-proof outlook, involving different industry stakeholders. For this design stage, a workshop was conducted to guide participants through future scenarios in order to gather insights on how we can address these issues today.

Manage

The outcome of the project is a "future-proof" strategic planning for the organization, encompassing its purpose, strategic objectives, and specific initiatives, all laid out in an implementable and flexible roadmap for the next 4 years. This comprehensive and proactive approach ensures that the organization is prepared to face challenges and capitalize on emerging opportunities in the evolving business landscape. The planning is grounded in a thorough analysis of both current and future contexts, as well as the incorporation of diverse perspectives from internal and external stakeholders. The final result is a strategic plan that not only sets clear and achievable goals but also provides the necessary flexibility to adapt to unforeseen and emergent changes along the path to organizational success.
